Creative Islands is part of Cultural Destinations, an Arts Council England-funded national initiative which supports partnerships between the cultural and tourism sectors. I am working with the Islands' Partnership, the destination management organisation for the Isles of Scilly, to deliver a programme of activities which aims to find new ways of celebrating and sharing Scilly’s culture and distinctiveness. Arts, culture and heritage are major strands in the new Destination Management Plan for the islands, and Creative Islands is one of a number of initiatives which together will contribute to a new sense of direction and sustainability for the Isles of Scilly.
We are working with artists of all kinds to explore and respond to what makes Scilly special, including the spectacular landscape and seascape, the dark skies, the many aspects of cultural heritage, and contemporary Scilly life. We have appointed Luke Jerram, Gordon Young and Invisible Flock to work on proposals for permanent commissions, and recently launched Walking Stories, a project which commissioned five award-winning authors to create original site-specific short stories.
